Really fantastic food - traditional flavors with a twist, while still doing Chinese cooking justice. Cocktails were also fun. Our server was excellent and attentive, though he did recommend over half the menu which wasn't wildly helpful. I'd say it's definitely worth a visit, though given the price tag I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to come back tomorrow.
If you like Asian Fusion this is your spot! Unique menu. Service is excellent. Food is great. Atmosphere is casual.
This spot is great for the vibe, but the music is approaching club levels for a restaurant. I didn't like that it was trying to be fine dining and a club at the same time. The food was very tasty, but the portions are too small for the price. The dishes that left an impression on me were the beef tenderloin and the black cod clay pot. If you visit, you have to get some kind of clay pot, the scorched rice is some of the best I've had in the city. I feel like you can't go wrong with any of them based on the cod at least. The tenderloin was super tender and well seasoned, just needed it to be about 1.5x the size. The lamb ribs fell off the bone and the eel club was very rich with the foie gras. The service was lacking for the price point also. In my opinion, this would have been 5 stars if the portions were a bit bigger and the service needed improvement, but that could have just been the server we got. I felt like other servers were more attentive, so that could change in the next visit. Highly recommend checking it out at least once and getting 1 of the clay pots.
My mentor lives in Memphis, but comes into the city to see her client and team in the city. Whenever she does, we find a nice place to eat and this place was the place we chose. My coworker wanted to go here for a bit and we tried to make it work but they did not accommodate more than 6 ppl. The place is pretty small. After being annoyed that I had to cancel a client dinner because of their limitations, I finally got it why they had a limit. The place is very small. The food is overall good, but think we got like three things and two drinks and it came to be about $300. It is on the expensive side. However, for someone that lost their appetite due to health issues and stress, I had one of the tastiest dish I've had in a long time. It is their steamed egg. It is a soft, velvety egg custard with the tiniest foie gras on top. The foie gras is what makes this dish. I don't think I would be going here on my own dime, but any work related matter that we want to be a bit more intimate, by all means!
We enjoyed this spot that was recommended by someone at our hotel. It was just down the street, and we were able to get seated at the bar without a reservation. We went on a Thursday evening, and it was pretty busy for a week night. For an appetizer, we had the Oyster and Uni. It was light and refreshing. The order normally is just 3, but they accommodated a request for 4 to serve 2 people. My husband and I both tried the Electric Feels cocktail. It was a Mezcal based drink and had a smokey finish. We enjoyed it and thought it paired well with our seafood dishes. We both split the King Prawns and Black Cod in a clay pot. It was the perfect portion for 2 to share. My favorite was the King Prawns, but the Black Cod and rice were very good as well. We would come back again. The atmosphere was trendy but chill.
Food is amazing, portions are very tiny. The price isn't that expensive and very reasonable for the food quality. This place has great ambiance for a date or anniversary, but since it's Chinese cuisine I would come here with larger parties (4+). The service was great, and on par with the establishment.
53 in Midtown is a sleek, upscale restaurant with a pan-Asian menu featuring flavors from China, Japan, Korea Thailand and Malaysia. We ordered family style a variety of their dishes. For smaller plates we loved the salmon carpaccio which was super rich and melted on our mouths as well as truffled xiao long bao. For proteins we licked our fingers clean after the succulent lamb ribs coated in bbq sauce and savored the incredibly tender beef tenderloin. For sides we had fried rice, egg noodles and pea shoots. We ended with the duck clay pot which was mixed table side and featured shredded duck and rice caramelized from the clay pot's fiery interior. Amazing service and amazing food will have us returning to 53 for our next special occasion dinner
Tina's take: 10/10 We came here for our anniversary and it was superb! The staff was so nice and very knowledgeable. Our waiter was great! The food was presented beautifully and tasted great. The waiter didn't steer us in the wrong direction with his recommendations. The clay pots were great for dinner and they mixed them for you tablet side. The lo mein was so good we got an order to take home. We got desert as well and it hit the spot. They even gave us a complementary desert for our anniversary. (It said happy birthday but it's ok, it's the thought that counts) Everything was clean there was another room in the lower level and that is where the bathrooms were located. Would absolutely come here for a special occasion night!
